Depression and Legos by scotland symons

I wanted to share a bit about depression, its a near and dear topic for me and my life. As far back as I can remember I have dealt with depression. Some days are better then most but when it strikes it like a crippling river of emotion that destroys any of the good I've built up in myself.  I tried every medication under the sun and unfortunately I am one of those lucky people where the side effect are worse then the depression. So years ago I tried several different ways to handle it beyond medication that I want to share.

Being a creative person I tend to always burry myself in a project hoping to lose myself to the ebb and flow of where ever that project may take me. When depression strikes I fell robbed of all that drive and motivation. I find that distracting and focusing my mind is the best way to break that cycle. But how to focus when emotions are tough and driving me to not be able to break free of its hold. Enter the LEGO! I have always found an affinity towards LEGO, its a toy that has always just delighted me. So in a bout of of a bad case of depression I grabbed a box of LEGOs that I never built and I thought why not. What I found was really interesting unlike a book or movie or anything else I've ever tried this got me back to a self manageable level of depression faster.

So this became a regular thing that I tried again and got the same results. I think its as effective as it is because its a driven simple instruction based activity thats colorful and tactile. Its soothing and quiet and in the end there is a thing so it feels really productive.

I also found it a great way to deal with anxiety and when I am just plain sick. A while ago a good friend turned me on to the Spoon theory.  And what I have also found is not only is this methodology helpful with triggers for things like depression and anxiety I can recharge it a bit  with a lego activity.

So now my world is different the depression isn't gone its a part of me and  part of who I am. But I have found ways to live with it and find a better place to be. Sometime my trip home from work looks like some wine and LEGOs, its my very own prescription medication. On the plus side its cheaper on the down side I don't know where to put all the finished ones.

The truth is depression is a real thing that you shouldn't have to hide from. Most who never suffer from it will never quite understand and so its up to us the individuals who live with it to find our own paths no matter what they be. LEGOs helped me and who knows maybe they can help you. I think the greater thought I would leave you with is try something new and even simple you may be surprised at the results. Our brains are more powerful then we give them credit and new pathways  and coping mechanisms can be formed if we give them a shot.

Update: Wizards and Beyond! by scotland symons

After I kicked off this project I felt like this project could be much larger so I am making some changes and looking to expand the project! I am also looking at adding multiple cites and extending out the dates as well as this turing into a full photo book! As the weeks roll on I am hoping to possible get some interesting locations and partners that might be joining this adventure.

From the projects subsite:

I want to extend this out to what ever nerdy interest that you have because this project is really about showing self expression and how you want to represent it. This really isn't about costumes or Cosplay but more about how you would visualize and express yourself as a character or a love of of that nerdy thing.

Who wants to be a Wizard, fuck you I am Wizard and you can too! by scotland symons

For me December is a month where I celebrate my own kind of holiday, a wizard kind holiday. Many years ago around this time of year I started watching wizard type movies and lounging with a hot cup of tea because why not. Suddenly this became a thing that I have done for close to 10 years and now every winter time I cant resist watching Potter or Gandalf do their thing.

To celebrate this I put together a fun project that I want to involve you in. I want to shoot some really great photos of my friends that captures them in their own favorite Wizard style.

Behold the bounty! by scotland symons

Look at me all hipster like and making things and getting all drunkenly domestic. I put together some fun infusions for the upcoming cold wintery months experimenting with a few favorites and trying a few new tricks. Two of the infusions I know are solid and a couple are experiments in accelerated oak aging. I will know how they turn out in 3 to 6 months but the other two will be ready in Dec. (I'm totally lazy and will post the recipes in an update)

I also made whiskey cookies heres my recipe:

Chocolate Whiskey Cookies

1 cup butter, softened

1/2 cup semisweet chocolate cocoa

Bake for about 10-15 minutes in the preheated oven, or until edges are nicely browned.

In the spirt of my favorite candy holiday Halloween finished out a somewhat gruesome and emotional painting tonight. It has some feelings in it but it was nice to get them out and I am sure it will make good holiday decor.

Why so selfie? by scotland symons

So if you haven't noticed by now I take a lot of selfie's and self portrait's. I know that so many have the opinion that a selfie is just to vain or silly but for me it has a different meaning all together. It reminds me of where I am, where I've been, and how Im feeling. Its almost like a journal for me cataloging my current place and state. Secretly I am a pretty solitary person and when I adventure this pictures help remind me of my self in those places and times. When it comes to my portrait work I like to use myself as the subject materI find it fun to play and understand what body position and lighting do to a persons image.   I share it with others to feel more socially connected. Its an interesting set of metal loops that my mind goes though but I though it was worth sharing.

Just wanted to share the fun and weird way my mind works and here's a few write ups on the topic that I enjoyed.

Rainbows! by scotland symons

With the recent SCOTUS ruling and Pride happening I wanted to add to the color with some fun images to make things fun and silly. With everyone on facebook and other social platforms adding the rainbow flag overlay I wanted to add something different so I present to you the Gay Warboy "Wargay for short".

I also made a quick sketch from a suggestion from a friend to have the Death Star shooting a rainbow laser beam. Here are the results.

Happy Pride :D

Japan in 35mm by scotland symons

Finally getting around to processing my film from my last trip to Japan. I am actually still working through all of the digital content as well. The trip east this time was purely to spend more time in a place that inspires me in so many ways. No matter how many time I set foot on that Island I find myself further lost in its beauty and culture.

While I was there I put out a challenge for myself to find a few film cameras to shoot with. I ended up finding two both very different but very special.

The first camera was found for 500yen (around 5$) in a discount bin in a camera store in Kyoto (http://www.cameranonaniwa.co.jp/).

It was assumed to be broken but I had a feeling and gave it a once over and thought I could make it work. the employees at the store were amused and were convinced that it wouldn't. I was so confident that I got a battery and some film. The store employees were nice and just gave the camera to me, they honestly wanted to see if I could get it to work after my friend Matt had told them I was some kind of wizard and could make magic happen. No pressure, so I gave it a go and gave it a little love a little shake and loaded it with film. Guess what that day I made magic happen and this was the first picture.

It was a little out of focus but after a bit more tweaking and cleaning and I got it to sharpen up. The metering I think is still bit of a crap shoot but the photos that it produced are haunting and so full of emotion.

The next camera was a bit of a trick and it wasn't until we came back to Tokyo in the second week that I was able to find it. I had always wanted a Contax, I love the style and design and weight and feel of it when its in your hand. Its heaver than you expect but smooth and is well fit in the hand. It honestly feels like a but of lush jewelry with its cool metal finish. The Contax has been compared to a few Leica's and has a bit of a following. They are not on the expensive side of cameras but they are also not a bargain bit camera. It was found at (http://lucky-camera.com/) for around 250$ with 90mm lens it may have been more or less depending on rates but it was a lust purchase. Here's its first image.

Its smooth and everything I thought it would be, the photos that is produces are clean but have character. Its now become one of the cameras I like to keep with me in my bag  for everyday.

Going with a theme by scotland symons

Using a theme helps me focus on a thing and I am currently working on a series of Mad Max inspired shots working to capture the personalities from the recent movie "Fury Road".  Using what I had laying around the house to build up costumes and props to help define each character I wanted to make sure the costume wasn't a perfect copy but rather got the feel of the character in question. Each had a different feel and to me tells a bit of a story about that fictional person.

You can find the full series here in the portfolio.

In showing these photos around one in particular inspired a short fictional tale about the character that I would like to share.

Story By Tristan Crouch

"The Vuvulini Sniper has killed more wasteland scavs than anyone, being responsible for closing the trap on those their "bait" brings in. However, removed via scope from the visceral horror of close combat, they have also seen numerous sisters die at adistance. The sniper's relationship with their weapon keeps them sane - the world lost the soma of television in the collapse, and with it, the luxurious sense of detachment from the horrors of the world it provided.
Despite their cold and steady killing hand, the sniper has been uniquely able to keep a sense of humor that many of their sisters have pushed into dormant places out of hard necessity, as the tragedies of the world will always be something that happens to somone else, far away.
Their sisters do not begrudge them the luxury - not only has the sniper turned the tide of many a battle by felling dozens as if by act of goddess; but the warmth they bring to the table at the end of the day through their cracked perspective and genuine laughter makes the harsh reality of survival more bearable, day after day - no matter the number of newly empty seats at the table."

Having Space by scotland symons

Having space is really important to projects and I'm lucky enough to have a space that I can build out to create random and interesting projects. Today I just finished building out some of the photo rig I'm testing for the "this is human" project. Basically the project is intended to capture portraits of people in a particular repeatable style. So far I am still playing with different types of equipment and configuration to find what Im looking for.

This is one of the shots that I like so far there are a few more located here

But I am very happy the space is coming together and I am looking forward to more time to create!

Travel is Social by scotland symons

I wanted to highlight a group of photographers I met last time I was in Japan. While walking down a back street in Harajuku I ran into a group of three students that were shooting with a wonderful large format camera and I couldn't resist asking about what they were working on. Through broken english, Japanese, and a wonky translator app we were about to have the most wonderful conversation about what they were working on. It was a project to capture portraits of people along with a note card describing that persons dreams. They asked if I would do it and I couldn't say no, just to fun of a project. In turn I shared with them some of my art and stickers and wished them the best on the rest of their shoot. Truly awesome and fun and I was really glad I got the chance to meet them.
